I'm keeping my 3G for another year (when my contract expires). I'm hoping that by then there will be an alternative iPhone carrier to AT&T (read: tethering capable). For now the 3.0 software will tide me over - I use about 1/100th of the features on the current iPhone, so no biggie.

The 3Gs is coming out here in the UK on June 19th and I would love a 32GB white one, unfortunately however, due to how O2 have decided to go about it you cannot upgrade any earlier than:
6 months from the end of your contract if you're on O2's platinum priority list.
3 months if you're on the gold list
1 month if you're on the silver list
Unlucky for me, I'm on the silver list and still have 7 months left on my contract! So, unless I want to buy myself out, which when you add the cost of that to the cost of a new iPhone 3Gs (32Gb version) and include 18 months worth of bills at £34.56 a month you get the grand total of £1,138.23!!
A little too much for my pocket at the moment!
Mind you, with the amount of uproar that's going on over this I wouldn't be surprised if they fold to some degree?
What are your thoughts? and is this a similar situation to any of you guys from the states and/or different countries?

If the original iPhone is still selling for a crazy amount of $$$ on eBay, even used, then my wife has given me the go-ahead to go for it. I could realllly use the 32 GB version.

I'm not buying it. I was selling my iPhone but had a change of mind. I'm not eligible for the discounted pricing and a new two year agreement isn't worth it. It's not much of an update either so I can live. I mean no one can tell it's a new phone unless you show them the video or compass.

ill hang onto my 3G for another year, don't feel like paying a huge fee to upgrade, Rogers hasn't even announced pricing yet. I paid a pretty penny to get the iPhone 3G last year as I was already in a 3 year contract.
I'll consider it once my current contract expires. I'd like the 32GB one as I have a lot of music, but I have an iPod touch that's the same size at the moment so I can wait.
It would be nice to have the newer one but I found it is not worth getting new one, at least for me, after checking with AT&T. The new 3.0 upgrade software should make me happier for now. I can live without the faster speed, videocamera, touch-focus camera, compass, etc... My area is not even covered by 3G network so I should be OK... A small and sad heck town I live.
Odenkun thats nuts they should not charge you $30 then for data there is no REASON at this time there whole network is not running 3G crazy in the USA we have such a sad cellular network

I'm in a 18 month contract with O2, I had the original iPhone and when the iPhone 3G came out O2 were cool and offered customers the chance to upgrade early, only having to fork out £160 for the 16GB version (which was good for me as I sold my first gen iPhone for £150, meaning I got the 3G for £10 + my contract price of (which was) £35 (and now, due to the VAT cut is £34.56) a month. The only kicker was that in doing this you entered into a new 18 month contract.
The reason the early upgrade from the iPhone to the iPhone 3G was so cheap (comparatively speaking) was because the iPhone 3G was apparently subsidized? But, this is not the case from the 3G to the 3Gs.
A lot of people will be unhappy by this (I'm one of them at the moment) but, I suppose on a plus note, waiting until December may have its benefits in (hopefully) a price reduction, software updates and/or possibly a new model/higher capacity? Who knows...
It would be cool to have the 3.2MP camera with auto focus though, and the voice command stuff looks pretty swish! But like many have said, a lot of the features will be had by 3G owners with the 3.0 update so all is not lost!
I may concentrate my efforts into staking out a new mac or something instead, the mid-range 15" MBP is looking pretty tempting (apart from the price lol)

Same here. Nothing significantly compelling about the 3GS, so I'll be sticking with my 3G till next summer when we can expect something much better. More importantly, AT&T should have rolled out its faster HSDPA network to more locations by then, so I'll actually be able to take advantage of the faster chip.
I've been holding off on a planned changeover to the iPhone (away from Verizon) until WWDC, in case new hardware was to be announced. That worked out even better than I had hoped, because now I'll also save myself $100 (since I need a minimum of 16GB of storage, which would have been $299 before).
