Hi guys,

So i got an iPhone earlier today... very excited! I'm just wondering, when I set up my email accounts, will new emails be downloaded to my iPhone and my mac? Also, if i reply from the iPhone, will this show up in my sent folder on my mac too?

Thanks guys,

Luke

This depends on your email account. Are you referring to an IMAP or POP email account?

Portable DAP: iPod nano 4G 8GB (green)
Headphones: Sennheiser HD485, Sennheiser PX-100W
Computer: Aluminum iMac 24" 2.8GHz
Mobile: iPhone 3G 16GB (black)

IMAP will keep things synced, POP will not.

ohh i see. one is a gmail account (pop), the other is a school email address also pop.

is there a way to stop it from downloading every single email on my pop accounts? i have 2,500 googlemail emails to go through so they no longer come up as unread.

You can set the gmail account up as an IMAP account. This is what I do and it keeps them synced. Plus, in the settings you can tell it how many of the old messages you want displayed on your iPhone.

Yep, I would set the Gmail as IMAP. IMAP accounts are much better suited for managing email from multiple computers/devices.

After signing into your account, you need to click the Settings link at the top of the page. It is here:

ok, so i've set up gmail on my iphone as imap, and on my mac.. but its all horribly confusing, there are all these [Google Mail] > All mail etc folders that i dont understand. to be honest i dont understand what is happening to my email (where its going etc) when i do something. I'd be very grateful for an idiots guide to setting this up on my iphone and my mac from scratch so that it just all runs smoothly. hours of googling seem to have got me nowhere and probably into a bigger mess than before :s

thanks for the link but i've looked at that already. it's dated October 2007, so a lot of the stuff mentioned either doesnt apply, or the options are no longer there.

for example, the "turn on/off recent" function... i cant seem to find that on my phone. its ok though, i've decided to stick with POP. thanks for your help anyway!
