    Specs:
Imac 27" Retina 5K, 512GB flash memory, 3.3GHz, 16GB memory, macOS Sierra beta.
Expoirt using an external hard drive or formatted USB thumb stick:-

iCal Calendar Backup – Back Up or Move Your iCal Calendars to a New Mac
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

The best way may be to use iCloud, however, your MacBook must be running at least Lion OS X 10.7.5. You can not transfer the calender via USB to your iPad.

Um, what the OP says he wants to do is SYNC (not really move) his iCal data from his Mac to an *iPad,* so your USB and HD ideas aren't going to work.

The actual solution is, as chscag said, iCloud (or straight iTunes sync if one prefers).
