Dear All

Help! I'm at a loss what to do.

I have just purchased a refurbished iPad 2 for my mother and tried to set up her GMail account.

When it reaches the stage of account verification an error message is displayed saying

The user name or password for imap.gmail.com is incorrect

Nothing I seem to do can rectify this. I have logged into the gmail account through the web browser and the same passwords are used without any problem.

Any ideas please

Thanks

Paul

Does the G-mail account have 2-pass verification enabled by any chance? If so, you'll need to generate an application(device)-specific password and use that to login from the iPad..

If that isn't the case, ensure that you aren't mistyping the password by any chance..

Are you definitely entering the correct case?

Try typing the password into the notes app so that you can see it then copy and paste it into the mail settings.

Failing that reset the password.

Sorry guys all good suggestions but still no luck. I've been into the Gmail account through a web browser and rest the password but still the iPad won't recognise it

Are you using the gmail or exchange option?

G-Mail added a 2-step verification process a little while back that requires you to not only enter your password, but a 6 digit number from the Google Authenticator application running on your smart phone. With that you get access to your account. With this new process, logging in through the web uses this process but on devices like iPhone, iPad and so on they resorted to handing out a one-time device/application password that you can generate once you are logged into GMail..

Do you have another Gmail account you can try to confirm whether that works? Or create a new one just for testing?

A very poor response, we need to get past the "restart and try again" as the first answer to ANY problem..

Restarting should be reserved for situations where the system is unresponsive or hung..

I had the same problem, then turned off my iPad and turned it on again. Poof! All the mail applications worked just fine (before some worked, some didn't; incoming mail arrived, outgoing wasn't sent). I realize that I hadn't actually ever turned my iPad OFF, just covering it putting it in sleep mode, then recharging, in a continual process. So while the RESTART answer sounds simplistic. It worked.
