Can I use an external dvd burner with an ipad 3?

I know earlier versions of the ipad did not allow this (usb could be connected only for charging purposes). Is this functionality included on the new ipad? I'm assuming I need to buy an adaptor and that there is no direct usb port on the ipad itself.

You cannot use external USB DVD burners with any iOS device..you can use the USB connection to valid devices for audio playback, connect to the wall for charging, connect to a PC for sync'ing and handful of other authorized accessories..

Apple doesn't have an API for arbitrary devices..

If your ipad is jailbroken you can use the camera connection kit to connect flash drives and external hard drives to your ipad using ifile.
