    After buying...
I'm picking up the ipad tomorrow on my way out of town for an extended weekend. Am I going to be SOL until I get home and can sync it with my desktop or can I use it for a few days before the virgin sync?

So, you might hate me for saying this... but, yes you do need to plug it into the laptop to activate it. At least that's how it was with the iPad 1.0 when I got it.

Unless you are picking it up from an Apple Store where they are supposed to set it up for you, at that point you'd be able to have fun with it

I'm about 99% sure they can set you up in the Apple Store. Let you log in with your Apple ID and do it all there before you even leave the store. Call to verify, but I know I've heard that before.

If you're buying it in an Apple Store, they can quickly activate it for you so you can use it for the weekend However, please keep in mind you won't be able to install apps, buy/rent movies, buy music, etc. until you first sync it.
