This tutorial explains how to load your t-bird contacts into the Address Book app on a Mac. After you've done that, plug in your iPad and tell it to sync with your Address Book.
Export Thunderbird's Address Books and Contacts

Note: The tutorial uses Windows screen shots but works the same way with Mac OSX.

Sorry but this didn't work as it did not give me the option of saving to my address book.
