I promise not to say it aloud. My wife is sitting right over there on the couch and I've already ordered my 64 GB iPad.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.

It may be a fad, but I've already purchased the X-Men, Spiderman and Ironman Comic book DvD sets in anticipation of my 64gb 3g model. Was originally going to have the 32bg version, but the wife didn't want to wait so we ended up ordering two.

I dont think its a fad, but its not the second coming of christ either. People have previously shown they aren't interested in tablets so the only redeeming feature this time is the app store. it's success, if it has any, will be due to the app store.

Its said to fill the gap between the smartphone and the laptop. I'm not sure there is a gap that needs filling there though. Steve jobs called it the third device, to me it's more of a fifth wheel.

My personal question is I wonder how the ipad will affect future ipod touch sales. As really if they are roughly the same price as each other I can't see many people going for the touch. I know I would not buy a touch if the ipad was only a few $ more.

A number of analysts have predicted the ipad will cannibalize ipod sales over the next two years. The touch definately.

It'll be a fad, just like that interweb thingy. People are losing interest in that everyday. Same with those iPody things, what the heck are those anyhow...?

How would that be possible? People buying the iPod touch have probably different needs than people buying an iPad. These products are different.

Great minds think alike. Wf-Fi only or are you waiting for the 3G model like I am?

These kind of arguments don't make any sense, unless your premise is that apple, by definition, are infallible.

The iphone succeeded, and while there were doubters, it wasn't the ipad. If we look at history mobile phones were very popular, and that is where apple shines, By bringing out and exemplary example of a device which is already popular. Tablets are a different entity entirely, they have routinely been rejected by end users who have made it clear they like smartphones and laptops, but don't need anything inbetween..

so just because the iphone was popular it doesn't make sense to assume an entirely different device will also be popular simply because it's made by the same people.

You're right up to a point. There is a flip side though. There have been several times in consumer electronics where companies were able to introduce devices and then wait for the market to see the need. The VCR comes to mind. Very few people saw the need for those either but by the time they were replaced by DVD burners every house had one or more.

Yes they are different. But their differences are minute at best. The only big difference is Ipad has bigger screen and some more apps. And touch has smaller screen/is more portable. That's the only real differences. So if you it's really up to what physical size you want your device I guess.

Do you want more screen real estate or more portability? And I'm assuming people would say the ipad is portable enough still with the bigger screen.

WiFi only here. My primary use will be at home, not a take it with me device. I've been awaiting a device similar to this in dimension and weight, I think ever since the Kindle hit the market.

I'm looking for a sit in the recliner, take it to bed, lounge in the sunroom, low heat replacement for a notebook in a size where I don't have to put on 2 pairs of glasses just to be able to read the thing.

There is possibly a competing device on it's way that looks very intriguing... but from a company that doesn't have a name for itself here in the U.S. - the Viliv S10 and up for pre-order at Dynamism.

It'll be more the thickness and weight of a hardback book, instead of a magazine though. And currently advertising a starting price of $700, has a touch screen, but the low end offering has Win XP which doesn't support the touchscreen... what's up with that??? Six models of the S10 in the line up. Can only imagine where the price goes from there for the top of the line model.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.

I actually think a LOT of people will keep the iPad mostly home-bound, bob. It seems very much like the logical thing to do with it. For example, you're watching TV sitting on the couch, and the commercials come on. You hit "Mute," pick up the iPad, it's on in an instant, you check your email.

You're done watching TV, getting ready for bed, maybe do a little reading before settling in. Again, on in a second, one click and you're right back where you left off on your book. You set the alarm on it and put it on the nightstand in "sleep" mode.

When it wakes you up the next morning, you can quickly check a few news sites, weather and traffic report, email and maybe even a game or two if you're feeling lazy before finally getting up. Maybe there's even an app that can control your coffee maker!

You take it with you to the kitchen, look up a recipe for banana bread so you can use those bananas, send it wirelessly to your printer, then shut it off before you head out to work.

Seems like a great "household internet device" that can be used in every room.
