I have an IPhone. So why would I want to lug this around? No camera so I can't video conference. No usb so I can't upload / download from a thumb drive. And a $2.50 paperback can be tossed on the car seat but this? Nope you need to carry it with you or it will be stolen. I just don't get it. And I currently have AT&T on my phone and the 3G is really poor where I live. So why would I want sucky edge network on this as well???
Sorry guys, I really want to believe. I just can't get past the idea of a laptop being better.
With all due respect to some in here. I think you are rather spoiled. Its nothing more then a big ipod touch? REALLY? personally I think the ipod touch was and is an awesome product. I think this product is going to fill a certain niche and not everyone is going to jump on it. Having said that I also think there will be improvements and all portable pcs will come in 2 flavors. One being your typical laptop as you know today and a touch version with all the bells and whistles you guys are saying it is missing. To add those currently would inflate the cost drastically and with the economy as it is right now I think they were wise to put it at the price point and feature set it is currently at. IM in the market for a laptop and will probably buy this when it debuts since it will do what I need and when it comes down to it that is all that really matters is if it does what YOU need then apple hit its target.

I guess it comes down to your typing skills. I personally can type a lot faster then I can write on paper.

Sorry, without a full OS or even a usb port, Its a no buy for me. I was thinking that maybe I could load serato on that bad boy and DJ with a pad. Just wishful thinking i guess. Not the smart buy imo, especially if you already own an iphone
a full os? are you kidding? great we get its not for YOU. Operating systems are constantly being reinvented and frankly os like microsoft is a bunch of bloatware and require too much horse power. Inovation always has a beginning and your train of thought has you convinced that you need a bloated OS currently and current technology yes something require that but a lighter os or thin client is where it is going Period get use to it. It will get better and soon you wont need a "full OS' on a mobile device to do what you want to do.

Actually, that would be a neat feature, to be able to re-size and move your apps around on the desktop environment, somewhat like exposé, but with a twist
Actually you can already do it in the ipod touch. I have just do it XD
first put your music, close music, and then open safari. the music keeps sounding till you open another audio in any other app. if the new app doesn't have audio you keep listening to the music

Yes but one annoying web sound and your itunes music turns itself off. That's be so annoying. But if you dould disable any sounds from safari while you are listening to itunes music that'd fix the issue.

I am considering getting an iPad as a replacement for an older MacBook. With an iPad can you:
- Install and use Skype?
- Install and use GoToMyPC or GoToMeeting?
- Install and use a program like CuteFTP Professional?

If anyone knows for certain, please let me know. Thanks.

Not sure about the other apps but Skype for the iPhone will work on the iPad from everything Apple has said.

Good idea that one about switching off sounds in safari.

As far as I know there is an app for skype for ipod touch, so yes, you will be able. and i guess skype stuff are right now designing another one for ipad. but in the meantime you can run the other one perfectly.

by the way, when do you think the next generation will release? I don't know how long the 1st generation of ipod touch lasted.

I am thinking if to wait or treat myself with it in summer..
