does the podcast app and iTunes sync podcasts over 3g/4g or do i have to do it manually over wifi every time? (not very apple-like or userfriendly)

Getting a huge bill for overages on 3G/LTE is not "Apple-like" or "user-friendly" either. But to the best of my knowledge, you can have new podcast episodes download to your iPhone over 3G/LTE if you want. As far as I know, iTunes sync has to be done over Wi-Fi, but I suppose if the computer AND the iPhone were on the same (3G/LTE) network that might work also. Haven't tested that.

what I want is just to sync position and episodes, not download any episodes... is that possible?

The latest version syncs across devices with iCloud.

External hard disk acquisition addict - but admitting the problem is the first step to a robust backup
