Go to the Mac App Store and type in iMovie in the search field and see what comes up. If it comes up with $ amount that means you will have to buy it.
Its $15.99 here in AustDont forget to use the Reputation System if someone has helped you out !!!

it only comes up as the new version with the star logo. yep 15 bucks.. what I don't understand though, is why do I have it on mine and she doesn't? we both bought the same thing back when.. Just for sh.. and giggles.., I went to the app store on my macbook too: it came up just the same. as available for purchase. but I clearly have imovie on here. (?)

All Macs come with a version of iMovie installed on them at the factory. Sounds like she deleted hers somehow.
Because the software is so cheap, every time they come out with a newer version (major version I mean) they just charge you the full price again. So for example if your machine has iMovie 09, you can keep using that or upgrade to iMovie 11 ... which will cost $15.

iMovies doesn't come with the OS, it comes with the computer. It's a separate application which you can get through the App Store.
