ipad operating system update

I have a 1st edition ipad and now I find most of the apps are made for ios4 or 5. Of course I have 3. Can I update and if so how?

Attach it to the computer you sync with. Open iTunes and select the iPad from the left window pane. In the right window pane, it should offer the option to check for updates. Do this and you should be upgraded to iOS 5.1.1.
