Had my ipad 1 for a year now and can't understand why the mail app is so bad. Sometimes it tells me I have mail and when I try to access it I see it for a second and then it disappears, never to be seen again. Also once I've read the ones that actualy appear and close mail everything disappears from my inbox. Don't know what bulk mail is supposed to be but sometimes there is a huge amount of mail in there, mostly stuff I have nothing to do with.
Anybody sussed out how to actually use it.

Might help if you state what email client you're using - Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail, etc.

I use Hotmail and Gmail with my iPad 1st Gen. Had it for over a year. Never had any problems. Maybe it's something to do with the preferences regarding storing/removing certain messages on server? Something like that? But no, never noticed any issues like what you're describing.

Do you ever turn your iPad off (completely, I mean)?

Give that a try. Often works wonders on misbehaving apps, and I'm always surprised that people often don't actually ever turn their iPad completely off (as opposed to just sleeping it).

Really? Hmm, never saw the point considering the incredible battery life and the fact that I calibrate every other month. Only time I've ever turned completely off was once when I was going to be flying somewhere. Haven't had any apps give me problems either, so that occasion never arose.
