is there an app (jailbroken/app store) that will allow the dialer to search contacts once you start typing in the first couple letters of a contact's name? similar to how the blackberry/android would.

ex- on keypad screen, typing 5->6 would bring up a contact named john, etc.

Do a search in the App Store for "smart dialer" and a whole slew of options pop up. I suggest checking them out.

Why not just hit Contacts and then J to bring up John?

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
