I've been unemployed for some time but continue desperately looking for work. I love to read but right now cannot afford to make frequent trips to Borders, et.al. to buy several books a month as I used to.

A family member who knows my passion for reading has offered to GIVE me an iPad if... IF I can download books without cost. Is that possible or is there a charge for downloading books, magazines, newspapers, etc.? Thank you very much for your help.

If you don't mind classics and some lesser know titles, Amazon has a lot of free books which you can download with the (also free) Kindle app. USA Today and NY Times have free news apps. These are just a few I know of. I'm sure there are lots of others.

What I call the Big 3 now on our iDevices - iBooks, Kindle reader and the B&N reader all have free books available. Over and above those are:

Internet Archive - 1.8 million books

Project Gutenberg - over 33,000 free ebooks

Librivox - over 3,000 free audio books - With a little googling, I found a list of 35 sites with free audio books.

Your local Library ebooks and audio books available for online download - in
Winston-Salem check here.

The Baen Free Library for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy fans, even some historical fiction and more.

Scribd

ManyBooks.net

Feedbooks.com

Also, I wonder if you've ever heard of a socialist institution sometimes called a "library."

Just kidding -- enjoy the iPad, the free ebooks and GOOD LUCK finding a new job.
