I write for a living, and I'm seriously considering replacing a Mac Pro with an iPad. I really love the aluminum Apple Keyboard mechanism, and the iPad's dock uses it.

Am I really crazy for thinking that I should get it and throw away everything else?

Yes, that's crazy. Buy the iPad, try to use it as your sole content-creation device for a few weeks, then decide if you really think it can replace your MBP.

Think about even the portability factor. You would then have to carry four separate pieces around with you. The iPad, dock, keyboard, and charger. With the MBP, it's one smooth durable device (and maybe a charger). Even the keyboard alone in a backpack or sling makes me shudder.

Plus, the lack of multitasking will probably drive you nuts. While in your word processing program, you won't be able to do anything else (besides maybe listen to music). This sounds nice in theory (no distractions), but I think it would be an annoyance in practice.

I suspect mostro is right. Save the iPad for when you are writing on the beach somewhere. I'm thinking Tahiti maybe. :lol

Agreed with Mostro and Sly. Give it a try. I doubt it will completely replace your computer for what you do, but there are times when you are lounging around that the iPad will make things convenient for you.

Why can't you keep both? You'll need a main computer to sync the iPad to

Uhhhmmm,

I'd say...

probably,

at least a little.

We're fixing to find out in 3 more days.

This thing has me excited enough that I'm considering wading through the crowds to be one of the first in line. I haven't done that since the time I was 4th in line to buy Stones tickets 30 yrs ago.

But, the typing... While I am one that had been putting off the purchase of a 2nd Kindle in the house because I wanted something more... with as much typing as I do just around the forum, this is the one area of concern I have. I am really hoping it will be able to replace the hours of time my MBP sits on my lap, but am afraid it won't be able to.

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.

Not sure about a lot of typing, but from what I have seen with Jobs using it and other videos, it should not be that bad. I can two finger type on my iPhone faster than I can on my Netbook (Acer Junk) with all my fingers as they will not all fit and the layout on that acer is so bad! I would imagine for me anyway that I could type a lot faster on the iPad than my netbook.

We will know soon enough. Please give us your report Bobtomay!

Plan to. But I most certainly will not be first out of the gate. I'm planning to use it for at least a week or so before I even try to write anything that pretends to be a review. Don't want my initial enthusiasm to color a report of the day to day use of the device. Of course by that time, everything may have already been said.

(Well, you know me. I probably still won't be able to keep from putting my 2 cents in.)

Bobtomay, that is why I await your review. I know you will be honest and tell it like it is! No hurry!
