I know there is an app that lets you go landscape with mail on the iPhone but is there any way to do it without the app? I'm pretty slow and just wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything. My fat fingers need that wide keyboard!

Nope, you'll have to make do with the third party app until Apple decides to integrate the feature itself.
