Move my itunes library to an external HD

I would like to know how I move all my music files and movies to an External HD rather than having them on my mac taking up room.

I have tried this but for some reason when I go to sync my ipod it duplicates all my files back to my mac. Is there anyway around this and if so please talk me through it step by step as I am a bit of a computer mong.

I have tried but it doesn't seem to correspond with what I can see in my preferences folder in iTunes. I have the newest version of iTunes.

The two options shown are still under the advanced tab in the preferences.

However they have moved the Consolidate library command to file > Library > Consolidate library
