Someone please shed some light on this matter. I'm getting all kind of answers, but none seem to answer my question...

My cell phone service is provided by my employer (which uses AT&T), so I can get an iPhone if I want. However, it's not worth me getting the iPhone if I cannot receive my work email on it (I do have a personal .mac account though, but it's a work phone and I really don't NEED my personal email always at my fingertips).

Now, I've been told that I cannot receive my work email on the iPhone because it's "not supported". My confusion lies in the fact that, while our company is predominantly PC-based, our art department is on Macs and they are able to receive our work email (using either Mail or Entourage). So why wouldn't I be able to receive it on an iPhone?

Any insight? It's the deciding factor for me to get one - AND I REALLY WANT ONE!!!

Thank you.

As long as you have POP or IMAP email you can do it no problem. If it is from an exchange server you just need to get the server info for it to work. The only email I have heard people have problems with are @bellsouth.net or @att.net and MSN accounts.

Hmm, I could see the problem being VPN related though.
Some companies require you to connect to the company network via a VPN connection in order to be able to access their email servers. Do you need to start a VPN connection on your work computer in order to access emails when you're not in the office?

The iPhone supports L2TP and Cisco VPN connections, but isn't compatible with a range of other gateways.

If you do not need to connect via VPN to access emails outside the office, then you should be fine as stated above. If Mail.app can handle it, so can the iPhone.
