Slower internet connection?

Hello. A couple days ago my wireless router (netgear) hooked up to a main computer reset because there was a power out. I am using that router to obtain wireless internet signal for my macbook pro and the internet surfing speed has decreased for some reason but I am still able to surf the web and good speeds.
This has also affected the apple mail program because it is not able to obtain any new mail messages (which I know there is because I checked on the email server) ever since this happened.
Is there something I can do to solve this.
My mac picks up the wireless connection automatically so I don't think I need to create a new network. And I have turned the wireless airport off and then on to see if it would make a difference but it did not.
Any help would be great thanks.
