help with airport express please???

so, i'm moving out of my parents place to the apartment next door (soooooo far away) and decided to get airport express so i wouldnt need to pay for an extra internet connection... so i'm on a dsl (PSTN) usb modem now, and went out and bought an ethernet modem to hook it up to my airport express and plugged it in but no joy.... what settings do i need??????? if there's one side of technology i'm completely hopeless with it's networks, so please please help me or i just wasted $200
