Ok, a friend of mine just got an ibook and she wants a wireless connection in her house. She currently only has a cable modem hooked up to the computer (via ethernet). So i was wondering what the best wireless router would be. Basically she live in a slightly old stone house so im really looking for what would give the best transmition, but by not paying too much. How does the apple airport perform against linksys for example? Is the airport compatiable with windows and is the linksys compatiable with macs? (i know the airport dual ethernet is)

thanx

Airport and windows are both compatible with both routers. Linksys will work on a mac and airport will work on a windows. I live in an old brick house and am using a linksys router and have had absolutely no problems. I had used an airport express and again had no troubles at all. My ibook works in the backyard, on the front porch, and in the basement.

Another vote here for Linksys. I've got a Linksys WRT54G. My powerbook and my wife's Vaio are both connected wirelessly. I live in the 3-story townhouse and we get great reception throughout the house.

I've used Linksys for the past 4 years - starting off with my first switch and to be honest I've had a few a problems. If you stack them - linksys cable modem and wrt54g - the bottom one will over heat and cause it to reset alot! But that's an easy fix just unstack them.

The next issue I had my WRT4G would lose my connection quite often, this is not that big of a deal except if you live in a dorm and you sell your internet connection to pay your bills and its going down on you, your friends are not happy haha. I would have to constantly unhook the cable modem, then the router let them hang out for a few seconds then, hook them back up, log into the router and dhcp renew.

So with this is mind I decided to try a new Belkin last month picked it up for $50 dollars at bestbuy and I've not looked back. The setup is very easy and so far no issues at all The range is very good they advertise 700FT and there is no part in my house we are not getting max reception!

I have a netgear wireless modem router and have no problems with XP or OSX. Very easy setup and has not dropped out once since I bought it. Good with Mac support too and the range is excellent even through stone walls.

Have had no problems using a Linksys WAG54G, works fine with both my old ibook (airport) and a PC.

I've had excellent results with the Linksys WRT54GS. Better even than the WRT54G imo.

Have had good results with both linksys and airport express. Currently using airport because I like to stream music to my big stereo in the living room and it was an easier router to set up on the mac (since they are made for each other.) But linksys is a good way to go, probably cheaper depending on what you get (my WRT54GS wasn't!)
