Is there a good application that will perform scheduled backups from my MacBook Air to a hard drive connected to my home network (external hard drive attached to windows machine via usb) using my home wireless network? The network is connected to a Netgear wireless router.

Time machine can do that (may need a bit of tweaking first but it can do it).

Though I'd be concerned about going across a wireless network to a PC then across USB to the drive. That's quite a few points of failure.

I'd suggest a network attached disk connected directly to the router personally. Else just connect your Air directly to your existing disk once a week to refresh the backup.

External hard disk acquisition addict - but admitting the problem is the first step to a robust backup

Not to mention how slow backing up that way would be. I second member mrplow's recommendation.
