I am trying to connect a MacPro to a wireless router via Airport and I am getting the dreaded "Airport as a self-assigned IP and will not be able to connect to the internet"
Message.

I have tried the usual remedies and it is NOT fixed by:

1) renewing the DHCP lease or

2) creating a new location and renewing the DHCP lease.

Anybody know anything deeper...or how to connect manually with DHCP? I have access through ethernet so I know the subnet mask, IP, and router info?

Thanks,

rf

With WIFI wonkiness I usually bring the Airport down to no encryption to see if the Mac will connect at all.

Hi mate,

I spent about four days trying to solve this puzzle. What worked for me was to change the modem/router password system from WEP to WPA. You can do that by typing the modem address in your browser and selecting a new password system. You can still use the same password if you wish.

What happened is that my Imac 27 (10.6.8) wasn't recognising the modem security setting and therefore the DHCP could not properly assign a valid IP (a friend actually explained me that..). To know if that is really your case, click in the airport icon on the top right of your screen (the radar like icon) with the "Option" button pressed. Right bellow the network you are trying to connect it will appear some further settings like "PHY Mode", "BSSID", "Channel" and finally "Security".
In my case, even though there was a required password to log in the network, "security" was being shown as "none". So I got in the modem through a flatmate computer and changed the password system from WEP to WPA2. As simple as that.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

WEP can easily be hacked in under 30 Min (sometimes under 5 Min) by any Wifi hacker. WPA2 should always be used if possible.
