As I understand it you want to get rid of your current router and use a TC in its place. You can do that with a TC. It does not have some advanced features that some people usually don't need such as setting some specific game-related features.

The documentation for the Time Capsule is pretty easy to understand. From what you are saying it appears that you have your existing router and modem as two separate devices. If that is the case once you have the Time Capsule configured you will probably be able to remove the router from the equation entirely since there are four ethernet ports on it.
When I first bought my Time Capsule it served as my router as well. My current network is making use of both the Time Capsule and router but that I could be running with just the Time Capsule if I made some changes to the physical location of some gear.
