I've just connected to the network at my Uni on my PowerBook. I'm getting a little concerned about the security of my files. There is some stuff on here that I really don’t want people to be snooping around in. How do I set up some sort of security to lock up my files to the rest of the computers on the network? Id rather change setting on my PowerBook than to download something.

I was having a look around and I stumbled across things like "Apple Remote desktop" and "personal file sharing." What is all this stuff? I don’t want anyone to be able to do that to me! I found it in the Sharing part of the system preferences.

To be safe all you need to do is uncheck personal file sharing and FTP sharing. You really dont need anything checked in there, I dont have anything checked.
