internet connection in my house

Ok, Im not sure if this even belongs here or not, but here is my question. I am about to get a new internet connection, and I have a mac mini that is our main computer. this computer is in my room, and that is where we plan on placing the modem. The thing is that I want to be able to send some kind of switch/router to another room that is really far, so that another computer (a PC) and an xbox can connect to the internet as well.

Do I need a router or switch? or something else? do I need to set something up on my mac?

I dont know much about this stuff, I appreciate any and all the help.
