Is there a way to upgrade the time capsule/airport extreme so that I can block individual sites from users. I know I can cut off internet from certain users.
But can you do this through a firmware upgrade or anything?

Nope, but you could use OpenDNS to do it, or maybe parental controls.

I was mainly wondering if I could do it from the router for blocking access to certain computers. I have openDNS already installed. I like to be able to do things on the fly..

So if you have OpenDNS already, then you're fine. Not sure why you think you can't make the change "on the fly" with OpenDNS.

No, but you couldn't do that with a router either. To control individual machine access, you would have to use parental controls on that machine.

Why not run the netgear as the router and just use the time capsule/airport extreme to serve the wireless? That is how my network is setup. I like the routing functions and dynamic dns on my netgear, but I have an Airport WDS with a TC and Aiport Expresses peppered around the house. I have the same problem - my netgear wireless wasn't getting all over the house as it was getting old so I used the Apple TC to add NAS and Airport Expresses to add signal plus Airtunes capabilities.

Well right now I have a weird network setup, I have my modem, followed by a wired netgear router, then both a apple time capsule and a netgear wireless router.

Reason being I share our internet over to the neighbors and like to give them their own router so that mine doesn't get over capacitated..

plus i don't know all the mac addresses of every computer and device hooked up to it..

Either way - the last (closest to the modem) netgear router has final say - so you could use that one to configure network traffic as you like. Or - let me ask the inverse - why are you trying to shape traffic with the Time Capsule instead of the Netgear router?

because it is accessible from an application instead of through the browser, and on the browser for that particular router, there is a lot of refreshing to get what you want to show up..

also whatever router it is connected to will let you add that computer to the filter list, but it won't let you block sites.. I like simplicity.

Simplicity would be mot illegally sharing Internet with your neighbor.

So I wouldn't worry about simplicity.

I wasn't aware that allowing our neighbors to use our internet was considered illegal.
We know them well and want to help them out any way we can and allowing them to use our internet is one way we help..
Regardless the internet company is getting paid, and we are paying for their highest package so i doubt that they are going to miss that extra money

Call you internet provider and ask them how they feel about it.
