Say you have an apple laptop, and you are not running firefox, just writing something:

Could someone hack into your apple and read any of your files?

Can you disable the internet connection, temporarily?

Sure you can...just turn off your airport...or unplug your ethernet cable if plugged in.

We both even included the ethernet part...which many people don't even use anymore.

I actually use Ethernet for my iMac, because the 50MB broadband service won't give full speed through wi-fi.

Actually I would still use ethernet with some of my desktops if running the cable wasn't such a pain in the neck. So I have a lot of Airport cards.

I'm with you. Wireless is much more convenient but my desk is right next to my router and so is my server so it seemed easier. Plus, I think there are some interference issues (my connection would go crazy once in a while).

By the by - if you have anything checked in System Preferences -> Sharing those resources will be available to anyone on your network. You can share folders as well as allow people to remotely login or view your screen. This means if any of those are available - someone can try to get in through these services.

I use the Ethernet port also every time I can. I have my house hard wired for Gigabit Ethernet and it's pretty fast.

I use WiFi when I can't use a Ethernet cable.

I have a typewriter under my bed somewhere. Have not used it in so long I forget how to turn it on! It's electric.
