I am staying with a friend for a month in the UK and cannot connect to his BTHomeHub router. I am getting an error from my on the wireless strength indicator that I've NEVER had before: the normal symbol is lightened and it has an exclamation mark in the middle, then in the drop down, Alert: No internet connection. The password I use is correct and has been accepted. My iPod touch won't connect either. My friend has had the hub for ages and uses it with his MacBook Pro.
In Network this message is shown, AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.104.24 and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Isn't it an unusual IP address. In the TCP/IP settings it shows 'Using DHCP' with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 and nothing under router. In DNS there is nothing. Is there anything known about BT hubs that I should be doing (I have switched it off and on) Gggrrrr |

Do you know what encryption the WiFi on the BTHomeHub router is using? Is it WEP? I found a few pages on using that BTHomeHub with OSX but they seem to contradict.
Any 169. IP address is a Self Assigned one by the OS because it can't get one from DHCP on the router. If his is set up like the one webpage on that router I found, you need to be sure WEP is set up for WEP 40/128-bit hex. Write back and let me know if it's using WEP as there are issues a lot of times with OSX and WEP. I have always been able to solve it though for my equipment. Also here is the one page I found on Connecting an OSX machine Via Wifi on that BTHomeHub. http://v3.thewatchmakerproject.com/j...e-hub-wireless |

What version of OSX is on your friends Mac? If it's 10.5 or 10.6 open System Preferences, Network, Airport and Advanced from Airport. Look for his router there and you can edit and see what settings are there. Don't save anything and mess up his internet!
![]() I hope this helps. Another quick note, sometimes at least with older versions of OSX, putting in a $ (Dollar Sign) before you enter the Key has worked with WEP. In other words $thisisthekey as an example. Can't hurt to try at this point! |

I'm on 10.6.3 he's on 10.5.8.
Can I set the TCP/IP info manually based on his info? IPv4, Subnet mask, Router. If so should any of them be identical to his and if not which should I change e.g. if his settings were ( and they're not) IP 192.168.1.63 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Router 192.168.1.266 What could I have a go at trying manually. (Please don't laugh if this is a stupid question because I have no idea how these things work! ;-) ) Cheers |
