I have a Powerbook G4 that is 5 years old. Will it make any difference if I buy a wireless router that is the new N technology, or is it so old that it won't know the difference from G?

It will run at the speed of your Airport Card, and that is G if you have a later model PB, say a 1.67GHz, or if much earlier maybe even B.
