Distance from router (wired)

I am going to be connected to my airport extreme as part of a file transfer system and was wondering what is the maximum distance I can be away from my router when connected by wire, (cat5 cable) and still have reliable quality and speed. Does the distance even matter?

Cat 5/5e/6 cable all have a single length max transmission length of 100m
