Can't connect to internet

My daughter just bought a brand new Macbook Pro. The AirPort Extreme can see and connect to my wireless network, but can't connect to the internet. When she first started up her laptop, it asked her to make a connection. when she couldn't, she clicked on "my laptop doesn't connect to the internet." Does that flip some type of switch to prevent her from ever connecting? We're new to the Mac World, so this is a mystery to us.

go to sharing preferences on yours and make sure you have ticked the internet sharing tab

I'm afraid it isn't quite that simple (as far as I can tell). My wireless network is set up using a linksys router (WRT54GS). My desktop is a PC. Could this be part of the problem? Am I looking at an incompatibility problem?
