how to download (mac noob)

cacti is offline
so i go to download a video player like winamp, or windows media player for a mac os. But when it downloads i open it up and its just a bunch of weird letters and stuff. Anybody have any info on how to download files?

Mac Specs: iMac 2.4 C2D 10.9.4, iMac 2.16 C2d 10.6.8, Macbook2007 10.8.4, Mac Mini 10.8.4, iPhone 3GS Note 8!!

dtravis7 is offline
Winamp and normal WMP are Windows Executables. OSX is a Unix based OS and will not run .EXE Windows applications. In place of WMP you grab Flip4Mac. Install it and quicktime will play Windows Media content. Also there is the Perian plugin that allows Quicktime to play most videos out there.

There is also VLC that plays pretty much anything and MPlayer for OSX.
