Please let me know what i'm doing wrong

Sounds like a permissions issue. What method are you using for sharing? NFS shares, SMB shares? If it's SMB, make sure you have the appropriate samba users and they have the appropriate permissions.

Am using Panther and Leopard. On Panther I have NO problem linking to a linux-server (HP/DEC -- Since purchase of MB w/Leopard I have been unable to connect to the linux-server share.

The site above references this note from Apple:
Mac OS X 10.4: Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Windows server

Followed the instructions, re-booted (as directed) and Eureka!

It works.

Good luck!

The easiest method for file sharing with linux is SMB (Samba) networking. Make sure your mac is the in the same workgroup as your linux box.
