apple store guy said I can't buy them anymore So, I obviously have to look for used or maybe even NIB.

What card do I need? Does the card matter to what Airport base I use?

you could buy and AirPort Express. the Express can extend your network then you can use its ethernet for you G4. you can then use "n" or "g" instead of "b"

Isn't the Airport Express a base and not the card that goes in the computer?

I have a G5 for my main computer, and I want to include my G4 Power Mac, which is an older (pre-July 2001) model. From what I've read, I can use an Airport Extreme card in my G5 and an Airport card in my G4.

Next question is, will an Airport card work with an Airport Extreme base?

Yes. AirPort is simply Wireless B.
AirPort Extreme is Wireless G.

G is backwards compatible with B.
