I am a part-time photographer and do most of my photo editing outside of the home where ever I may be. I have a macbook pro and a 120gb lacie. I have two other hard drives to store/backup at home on that equal about 750gb of space.
If only one thing mattered, and everything else was a plus, which would you go for, more storage space or the benefit of portability? But put yourself in my shoes. The only thing that really matters right now: I need some more space (like 50gb) to transfer some files out so that I can work on the data. The data can be cleaned out later, but right now I have a project that is pressing and I just need more storage space to move the files temporarily so I can work on them. So, should I go with 250gb portable Lacie or 500gb stationary Lacie. Give me your vote! Andry |

I would normaly say 500gb, since bigger is better in terms of HDs... and Lacie has a fantastically priced 500gb portable HD (I bought one myself the other day) but if you only need an extra 50gb I don't think I'd bother paying the extra cash...

When I was upgrading to Leopard, I was initially looking for a USB powered one by Lacie (the disc/transfer speed appeared to be the same as AC powered drives by Lacie) since I was going to be traveling a lot. They were out of stock and I regret not getting one. Gig for gig though, I think they work out more expensive, but I think it would definitely be the more useful. (I guess USB powered is what you meant by 'portable'?) Considering you already have around 750gb of storage, a portable drive would be great for work on the go. Fewer cords, comparable speeds and probably much lighter as well. If you want convenience, I'd go for the portable. You can always back that up to another drive later anyway.

I'd get the portable.
As long as you're not relying on it for backups (2,5" portable drives seem to die faster than 3,5"), you'll use the 2,5 far more than a 3,5" drive that you'll need to lug a power brick around for. |
