what software can batch rename and resize images?

Others have said automator will do this. I haven't used it though, so it's something you might want to browse for unless some one else chimes in soon enough.

Automator is good for batch processing. Oh, and Photoshop can do batch processing, too, if you have it.

Yup, if you have Photoshop, go to File, Scripts, Image Processor. It will process one folder of images into another, and can do all sorts of things, like resizing, changing color spaces and so on. I use it all the time. A wonderful tool.

Automator for free but limited ability.
Photoshop for the full blown automated process.
