problems with saving files in gimp

I have a unique problem. When I save a file in gimp, the file does not show up in the Finder window when I look for it. If I do a file->open from gimp, it's there. I looked for it in terminal using ls -a and it is still not there.

Has anyone heard of this problem and it? If so, how?

Thanks
