is ther a free photo editig software for macs, other than photoshop, like the Microsoft form of paint?

there is gimp, and seashore. They are both free, havnt used either, but i hear they are very good

i think you still need to use x11 for gimp on macs. if so, installation may be tricky, but not impossible.

i installed it on my windows xp pro machine at work and found it to be completely usable. a bit unintuitive perhaps, but pretty fully featured.

Yes, you will need X11 to run Gimp on your Mac. You can find the X11 package you need on your Tiger install discs (you can't use the one that is downloadable from Apple so don't bother).
To make Gimp a little more "intuitive", you can also download and install GimpShop. It adds an interface to Gimp that is more like Photoshop and much easier to navigate.

*nevermind, it's on gimps site. it just says a packager file thing*

Will i need to get it (x11) for a mac book pro osx tiger?

i tried my osx tiger install disks, but 2/2 tells me to put the other in and 1/2 has basic programs, where do i go from there?

Right now, I'm trying seashore, and i like it, for a free program, but I'd like to try them both out.

Just insert the discs that came with your computer
Look for 'Optional Installs' and select it
In the installer you will find 'X11' - put a check next to it and follow the instructions from there

It's pretty easy, have to have it for Open Office also
