Wow, what a beautiful day for a drive in the country! I headed out right at sunrise this morning and drove for 4 hours, stopping to photograph Mt Hood from a number of different locations. The camera was mounted on my trusty Manfrotto tripod and I used a timer on triggering. A circular polarizer was used. I like what I see.

Mt Hood - Highway 35 South of Hood River, OR.

I have GOT to get a camera where I can use a polarizing filter! I live not far from the Olympic Mountains and the haze is a constant challenge.

Excellent pics, sir. Nice work. I particularly like your framing a building in the picture to make it less abstract (as a pure landscape picture can sometimes be).

Thanks. Having just picked up the new camera yesterday I'm learning fast how to take advantage of this monster. It's incredible!

I had a Nikkor 24-70 F/2.8 FX lens aboard the D800. It will prove to be my workhorse. I also own a Nikkor 50mm F/1.4D and a Nikkor 70-300mm F4-5.6G, all FX lenses.

I'm really interested in the D800, Bob, so I appreciate the pics!

Any way you can pick out a portion of your picture to crop and enlarge to see how useful the 34mp is?

What's your overall impression of the camera?

I'm looking to take a major jump up from my D300. Worth the upgrade for someone who likes nature photography?

Thanks!

Here's a shot I took today of a collection of 4 thistles with an open field & farmhouse in the background. I shot it at F/4 with my 24-70 to blur the background. To see how sharpness was maintained when doing heavy cropping I picked just one thistle to enlarge eo 30"x20", the native size of the whole original photo. At these extreme conditions look how good the end product looks.

I also own a D7000 which is a wonderful camera. The D800 blows it away. I've only had that D800 two days, yesterday & today. So far it's been a snap to use. It's a heavy camera with a 2 pound beast of a lens like the 24-70 on it. It wakes it easier to handhold a steady camera that has some weight to it yet the D800 is reported to be lighter than the D700 it's replacing. At $3,000 for the body it's a bargain. It's half the price of the top D4 and a better camera. You can't imagine what a difference there would be over your D300.

Wow! That detail is fantastic, Bob! Thanks for posting the cropped image.

Now I just have to wait for one to become available. I hear they're a pretty hot commodity right now!

I can't stop thinking about those pictures… probably because it so green and summery and here it's yucky rainy, drab, grey, spring is somewhere, hopefully around the corner weather.

It's green. here all year long. We get 8 months of rain and 4 months of being the garden of paradise. We're ahead of schedule for garden time. We get a couple of more great days before 60s & 50s return.
