I am new to my iMac but still don't understand why I can't download pics from my camera to iPhoto.

I have followed all the steps - plug in the camera, turn it on etc - and up comes iPhoto. It is registering the amount of photos I have taken (in this case 64) but, there are no picture thumbnails. When I press the 'Import 64 photos' button the message I then get says, 'Unreadable files....DSC_0004.JPG
DSC_0005.JPG
DSC_0006.JPG
DSC_0007.JPG
DSC_0008.JPG'
blah blah blah.

Help!

I'm not certain but I believe you need to use the Nikon transfer software for direct upload to your Mac. If you have a card reader in your Mac or external card reader, remove the SD card and upload the photos that way.

The D70 is compatible with iphoto so there's something wrong somewhere.

Either the card is corrupted - you could check this by trying to upload the pictures to a different computer, or there's a problem with transferring them from your camera - you can check this by using a card reader and not relying on your camera and USB cable.

Specs: Late 2012 iMac 27", 2.9GHz Intel Core i5 Dual, 1TB hard drive, 8GB RAM, OSX 10.8.3

Never use the camera directly. It's the best way to corrupt your files. Go spend $20 on an SanDisk 12inOne card reader, or if your Mac has an SD card slot, put it in there.

Doug: D70s uses CF cards not SD.
