We had a designer leave recently and his fonts are a mess! Anyway, is there a way to restore the fonts set up as to how they were when the machine was first started up? He put a ton of fonts in libary>fonts. We don't want to delete fonts as they are tied to many projects.

Not sure I understand. As long as the original fonts are still in the MacIntosh HD/Library/Fonts folder they should all be sorted. If you want the font folder to look like it did when the machine was new, you would have to remove all his installed fonts or move them to the user folder instead.

If you are going to use a lot of fonts I would recommend using a proper font manager instead

Linotype FontExplorer X Download - Softpedia

If you really want to manage your fonts well I suggest the suitcase (another font management tool - not free) guide to best font practices in OS X (the guide is free)

Best Practices for Managing Fonts in Mac OS X - 6th Edition (updated: Oct. 2009)

Just substitute use Suitcase with use Linotype FontExplorer

At work we use Suitcase Fusion for font management. It's the best one for the mac right now.
