Replacing count badges?

Is there a way to replace the count badges on applications like mail? I've seen some that have been replaced, but I don't know how.

My guess is that you can change them by:
right-clicking the application>Show Package Contents>Contents>Resources
then finding the image and replacing it with another image of the same name. I've never tried to so I'm not totally sure on that just a guess.
