how to make a picture slide show

I want to make a picture slide show with some video clips - So do I make it in Iphoto or Imovie and then take it to IDVD and then make some chapters to reference the photo's and video clips.

please help me a guide me down the right path

You would create that in iMovie first and import the project to iDVD, if you're wanting to make a DVD out of it.

Correct, create your project in iMovie and add music or sound affects along with visual effects you would like. Then "share" it with "media browser" which will make it accessible for iDVD.
Its not real difficult, just keep playing with it and you'll get it no problem.
