When I do a screen capture it ends up with a resolution of 72dpi
is there a way to set a screen capture(or part of it) at a higher resolution? in preferences?

If you have the dev tools installed, there is a application called Quartz Debug it allows you to up the DPI to 216 DPI, this would maybe work if you had a huge screen to view it on.
This is what happens when I open mail with the DPI set to 216 DPI. The black HUD is from Quartz Debug. Screenshot 2010-06-15 at 1.33.09 PM.png
Other than that I don't know of any way to take screenshots over 72DPI, because 72 is the default DPI that the mac has.
