icons and get info

I'm not sure this is the right forum, but when I try to change various icons by doing the copy/paste from get info windows, icons ending in png or icns won't show up in the upper corner of the get info window...it's just the weird preview image. jpg shows fine, but others don't. any idea what's causing this?

Which icons are you trying to change?

trying to change my external hard drive icon. I can see it's icon in get info, but the icon I want to change it to has an icns extension and I don't see the actual image in the get info screen.

Let me look around for you to see what's up. I'll get some icons and try it out see what happens.

Okay, so it worked for me. Here's what I did:

I downloaded some icons from InterfaceLIFT

I opened up the folder containing the icons after they downloaded in finder

I dragged the icon I wanted and dropped it in the Get Info section onto the icon I wanted to change

The icon has been changed
