Hair tearing with CyberShot W290 into OS X, 10.5.8

Hello. I have a new Sony CyberShot W290. I plug it into USB and turn it on, but I cannot see it in Finder. However, I get an error message that it "was not properly put away", and recommends that I go to Finder, Files, Eject. Reviewers have said that connection works seamlessly, so what am I screwing up?
