nub question on desktop customization

ok i dont know whether these types of threads have been posted up a million times before.. i have used the search fn and all i found were post-screenshots-of-your-desktop posts and an official desktop customization thread with >118 pages that i really would rather not go through.

I remember a while back i found a pic online of someone with a mac and had a desktop setup like this:

then today i found the pic again saved somewhere in one of my multitudinous porn folders oddly enough and i realized, hey. why am i not doing this?

so im sure practically everyone on MF knows the answer to this noob question and everyone can or already has done or can see no point in doing it or even discussing about it but as a mac noob, HOW DO I MAKE THE AWESOME?

Yes I to would like to know the ways & means to set up my own working piece of art like that pic.
It would be very interesting to learn just how much of it is functional...
