If you want to see both your original and edited photos in iPhoto make a duplicate first and edit that.

Well I just got hold of Lightroom 2.

It looks very nice I must say. I just need to learn how to use it now!

Do you use iPhoto for your events, then Lightroom for your editing?

Or, Lightroom for everything?

So far - not impressed! I cannot look through my iPhoto gallery and import a photo to edit. I cannot drag and drop either.

Looks like if I want to use Lightroom then I need to ditch iPhoto?

I use Lightroom 2 and Elements 6. Find Lightroom does most of what I want and only move to elements to perform more complicated cloning. Shoot exclusively in RAW and save files to an external HDD which is backed up to another HDD.

Try the free Lightroom trial from Adobe. You may find you dont need anything else.

I use Lightroom 90% of the time these days. Aperture is equally as good though. It just comes down to what you're more comfortable with.

Oh and, when you edit in iPhoto, you don't change the actual image at all. Same with Lightroom and Aperture.

chrismac: that is what my wife started doing when she takes pictures (same
as teedub). Then she uses iPhoto and was able to make the picture
colors pop. I will be installing Photoshop Elements soon which add
more options than iPhoto for her.

So she imports the photos first to Lightroom - edit them then imports to iPhoto.

What I am thinking about doing is import the photos to a folder in Finder [import with preview]. Pick and choose which to keep, then edit them prior to importing them into iPhoto.

I found Aperture very easy to use without using the manual or looking at the videos. But if your really stuck outlaw, Apple offer training courses at venues for about $400 which by the end of it you will know it inside and out, you can also pay a little extra for an exam and become a Certified Aperture Pro which I am hoping to do once the next course is on.....

You CAN use both! In iPhoto preferences, General Tab, select Edit - last option is 'In Application'. Set that to Lightroom (you browse in Applications folder) and you can then do exactly what you want. WHen you hit Edit in iPhoto, Lightroom will open with your picture.

I got it sorted now [see my Photoshop thread].

Basically it took a few reboots for the integration to work.

My setup is now this:-

Import all images via iPhoto.
iPhoto manages and sorts into Events.
Prefs setup to use Photoshop CS4 as an editor.
When Image is selected for editing Photoshop is launched.
iPhoto launches the duplicated image found in the 'Modified' folder in iPhoto database.
When photo has been edited in CS4 it is then saved over the original file in 'Modified' folder structure.
After about a second or two the thumbnail in iPhoto gets updated with the edited version.
If I want to 'revert to original' iPhoto select the original photo in 'Originals' folder. Which updates the thumbnail.

I didnt use Lightroom in the end because it too is a image manager like iPhoto - not a dedicated editor like PS CS4.

My advice would be to use iPhoto and CS4 together, as it works very well.

I use Adobe Lightroom 2 and for manipulations or Further editing i Use Adobe Photoshop CS4. The reason you may having that issue, is because iPhoto dose not retain that original information like camera information or date information. because it is creating a new file and its own from the program. You Will need to use a free application to do so or Get Adobe Photoshop Trial to retain the original info content.

I use the GNU Impage Manipulation Program, the GIMP for short, on both Mac and PC, works great and the price just can't be beat, free

So how do you handle your workflow? I am still trying to get my workflow process to a manageable process. I typically take sports photos (competitive cheer mainly) so I will have roughly 2-3K shots per event. I really need to find a quicker way to sort and apply PP to all of these photos so I can get them uploaded to my site so people can view and hopefully purchase within the first 48 hrs. I shoot in Raw 100% of the time. If you don't mind sharing, I would love to get some input on how others handle this when using LR2 and CS4....
